Indian subsidiaries of the two prominent luxury SUV makers have declared price reductions in wake of the Indian government's recent GST rate revisions. Here's what it means for their customers.
For those with their eyes on a new Land Rover or Jaguar, or even a Volvo, this might be a good time to consider making the purchase. In wake of the Indian government's recent GST rate revisions, the Indian subsidiaries of the two prominent luxury SUV makers have declared price reductions. Jaguar Land Rover India is slashing prices by up to 30.4 Lakh (approximately $40,000) on models like the Defender and Discovery, while Volvo Car India is reducing prices of its ICE (internal combustion engine) models by up to 6.9 Lakh (approximately $8,500).
The hefty price cuts have been attributed to the Indian government's recent GST rate revisions, which lowered the rate on vehicles from 28% to 18%. Volvo and JLR hope this will catalyze sales in a struggling market, thus gaining more customers. The price revisions are a result of a thought-out strategy to enhance sales volume and stimulate demand, rather than a reaction to any specific event or circumstance, according to Volvo.
The price reduction is effective immediately and varies across models. For example, the Discovery Sport with the P300 engine will now cost 43.8 Lakh (approximately $58,000) instead of 75.6 Lakh (approximately $102,000), excluding charges such as road tax and registration. The price of an entry-level Defender 90, which had just been launched in India last month, has been reduced from 69.9 Lakh (approximately $91,000) to 39.4 Lakh (approximately $53,000).
It remains to be seen whether the price cuts will be enough to stave off the general downturn that the Indian automotive market has been experiencing over the past year. However, with the new pricing, these SUV giants are hoping to make their vehicles more accessible and attract more buyers who were considering making the jump into the luxury SUV segment.
