Constable Among Two Held For Extorting Money From Bengaluru Ragpickers

Police constable probing a case of extorting money from ragpickers in Bengaluru has now been caught on the wrong side of the law himself, allegedly for the same offence. The racket was came to light during a health awareness camp at the migrant colony in Varthur when a few victims approached him with their woes, following a complaint was filed.

In a shocking twist, one of the accused turned out to be a policeman attached to the Sarjapura police station. The accused constable, Manjunath S. (35), and cleaner Suresh B. (30) were arrested and charged with extorting money from vulnerable people who collect recyclable material, or ragpickers, after a complaint was filed on July 22.

The accused allegedly threatened to file fake cases against them if they did not pay up. According to police, Manjunath, who was on patrol, would pick up ragpickers and take them to the cleaners, threatening them with jail unless they paid up. Sometimes, Suresh would accompany him on these patrols.

A probe was initiated after some of the victims approached the Varthur police with a complaint. "They extorted money from at least 10 ragpickers. Based on the complaint, we registered an FIR and subsequently arrested Manjunath and Suresh," a senior police officer told media.

Manjunath has been suspended, and police are investigating whether he was acting alone or with the help of others. According to the police, a few other accused, including another policeman, are yet to be arrested.
