A horrific road accident in Mangaluru, Karnataka, turned deadly when a woman helper of a truck driver was crushed under the vehicle's wheels. The truck was loaded with fish and was attempting to avoid a pothole on the National Highway 75, towards Ullal from Mangaluru city. Now, the driver of the truck has been charged with manslaughter, while officials from the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) have been booked for negligence in maintaining the highway.
The woman, identified as Shabana, 40, was caught under the wheels of the vehicle when the driver, Rajkumar, was trying to negotiate a pothole near a toll gate on the highway. She was rushed to a hospital but died of her injuries.
Police said that Rajkumar applied the brakes suddenly and stopped the vehicle when he found that Shabana, who had alighted from the truck to take a different route, was trapped under the wheels.
"The driver and his helper were returning from Kollam in Kerala after unloading fish in Mangaluru. They took the National Highway 75 towards Ullal from Mangaluru city. When the vehicle reached the toll gate, Rajkumar realised that his helper, Shabana, was not inside the vehicle. He stopped the vehicle and found her trapped under the rear wheel," the police said.
Shabana, a mother of three, lived in Nanthoor, Ullal.
A case has been registered at the Panambur Police Station against Rajkumar under Section 304(A) (causing death due to negligence) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 176 (threatening the life of a passenger) of the Motor Vehicles Act.
"As negligence on the part of NHAI officials too was found in the incident, we have booked them under Section 304(B) (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code," a senior police officer told media.
The officer added that an investigation is underway.
"Rajkumar and Shabana were working for a fish trader in Mangaluru. The vehicle was loaded with fish and was returning from Kollam. The incident seems to be a case of negligence on part of the driver and the NHAI," the officer added.
