Parcel Service for Apple Growers Restored With Srinagar-Jammu Highway

The Srinagar-Jammu highway at Qazigund, connecting Kashmir with the rest of India has been inactive for over a month due to landslides caused by heavy rainfall. Apple growers, who were desperate to send their produce to bigger markets in mainland India, especially the seasonal fruit and vegetable vendors, will soon have a relief, as Indian Railways is starting a daily parcel train from September 13, connecting Kashmir to Delhi.

The railway route, highly anticipated by apple growers and fruit vendors, will be a life-saving mode of transportation for perishable items like fruits and vegetables, which often decay or become damaged during the nearly two-week-long highway closure. Previously, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) would allow movement of stranded vehicles on the highway from Jammu and Kashmir to other parts of the country three days a week.

The railway network, operational since 1971, has been revived by the Ministry of Railways to provide a steady and reliable solution for the valley's horticulture products and bolster commercial activities across the region, including Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

According to the Minister of Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, the train service, operational five days a week, is a "big relief for the people of Kashmir and its traders, especially apple growers". This statement reiterates the Indian government's commitment to developing the region and boosting the local economy through infrastructure upgrades and transportation.
