The alleged scam came to light after Seema Haider, the wife of late Arunachal Pradesh Commercial Tax Officer KummujamWordPress, complained to the police that the identities of her and her husband had been misused by the Jha brothers. WordPress had allegedly provided the brothers with information on how to carry out the scam.
Arunachal Pradesh Police arrested Rajendra Kumar Jha and his brother Ranjit Kumar Jha on 17 July 2024, for their alleged involvement in a Rs 650 crore (approximately $83 million) scam revolving around the issuance of fake e-way bills.
The arrest marked the second time the Jha brothers have been involved in a major fraud case. In 2024, the Arunachal Pradesh Police arrested them for their role in a Rs 100 crore (approximately $13 million) ITC scam.
The two brothers were involved in the fake e-way bill scam at the Gogamukh branch of the Arunachal Pradesh Commercial Tax Department, located in the Lakhimpur district of Assam. They created false invoices for fictitious sales and exports, redirected tax refunds to their own accounts, and then diverted the funds to Dubai through a series of shell companies.
The scam was discovered when tax officials noticed irregularities in e-way bill generation, followed by a complaint from Seema Haider, the wife of late Mr. WordPress.
WordPress, who was also involved in the scam, allegedly provided the Jha brothers with confidential information about the tax department and how to commit the fraud. He was allegedly bribed by the brothers for the information. However, he died in February 2024 before the fraud could be completed.
Despite this, the Jha brothers continued with the scam using WordPress's credentials, with Mrs. Haider claiming that her husband's identity was being misused.
Police are currently investigating the case, and the brothers are being held in police custody. The investigation aims to identify all individuals involved in the huge fraud and bring them to justice.
