'Desi' Engine Empowerment Brings Indian Fighter Jet Closer To F-35, Su-57 Class

The development of a powerful new engine for India's 5th Generation Fighter Jet (FGFA) has brought the nation closer to the forefront of global military aircraft manufacturers, potentially giving its fighter jet capabilities that exceed those of the well-renowned F-35 and Su-57.

The current prototype of the fighter jet is powered by Russia's AL-31 MKVE engine, which provides enough thrust to surpass the capabilities of India's existing fleet of fighter jets. However, the recent tests of a homegrown engine, the interim cryogenic propulsion (ICP) engine, have been successful, with the ICP demonstrating a maximum thrust of 26,000 kgf in a recent ground test.

Once operational, the 140 kN engines would surpass the thrust of the American F-35's Pratt & Whitney F135 engines, which produce about 125 kN. While the F-35 benefits from stealth technology, the Indian fighter jet has opted for a different strategy, prioritizing speed and maneuverability.

India has also developed the BrahMos missile, one of the fastest missiles in the world, which can be equipped with this new fighter jet. Currently, the BrahMos is outfitted on the Indian Air Force's Su-30MKI fighter fleet, which has proven to be a successful combination of speed and firepower. With the addition of the new fighter jet, India is well on its way to establishing a dominant presence in air warfare in the near future.
