On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the termination of all remaining U.S. attorneys appointed during Joe Biden’s presidency, citing the need to restore fairness in the Department of Justice (DOJ). Trump claimed the DOJ had been “politicized like never before” over the past four years and emphasized that a fair justice system is essential for America’s "Golden Age." His directive, shared on Truth Social, underscored his commitment to eliminating perceived political bias within the DOJ.
While it is common for an incoming president to replace U.S. attorneys, Trump’s move was more abrupt and decisive than usual. Typically, new administrations request resignations rather than issuing direct termination orders. Following the 2024 election results, several Biden-appointed U.S. attorneys had already resigned in anticipation of being replaced. However, Trump’s aggressive action signals his broader effort to overhaul the justice system and remove officials he believes were part of a politically motivated DOJ.
One notable resignation came from Denise Cheung, a top prosecutor in Washington, D.C., who stepped down after refusing to open a grand jury investigation into an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) funding decision made during Biden’s administration. Reports indicate that she was pressured by Trump-appointed superiors to proceed with the case, but she deemed the request premature.
Trump has long criticized what he calls the “weaponization” of the DOJ, alleging that it was used against him during his years out of office. His mass firing of Biden-era U.S. attorneys aligns with his broader campaign promise to “clean house” and reshape the federal justice system according to his vision.
While such transitions in personnel are standard when a new president takes office, Trump’s approach—characterized by direct dismissals and strong rhetoric—marks a more aggressive stance than usual. Legal experts note that while career DOJ officials often remain in their roles across administrations, many in cities like Washington and New York have resigned or been removed since Trump's inauguration.
Trump’s decision has sparked debate, with supporters viewing it as a necessary move to restore impartiality in the DOJ, while critics see it as a politically motivated purge that could undermine the department’s independence. The long-term impact of these changes on the DOJ and legal proceedings remains to be seen.
