On February 24, 2021, the
Department of Telecommunications (DoT) introduced the Production Linked
Incentive (PLI) scheme to promote domestic manufacturing of telecom and
networking products in India, with a financial outlay of ₹12,195 crore,
according to an official statement.
The statement highlighted
that, as of January 31, beneficiaries had invested ₹4,081 crore, achieving
total sales of ₹78,672 crore, including exports worth ₹14,963 crore. The
initiative has also created employment opportunities for 26,351 individuals.
To enhance domestic
manufacturing and provide greater flexibility, the scheme guidelines have been
revised. An additional 1% incentive is now offered for products designed,
developed, and manufactured in India to encourage design-led production.
Furthermore, 11 new items
have been added to the approved product list based on industry demand.
Companies can now incorporate these products at any time during the scheme and
file incentive claims quarterly. Covering 33 telecom and networking products, the
scheme aims to bolster India's manufacturing sector. This information was
shared by Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, Minister of State for Communications
and Rural Development, in a written response to the Rajya Sabha on March 20.
