How National Initiatives Are Tackling School Dropout Rates in India

India has made significant progress in reducing school dropout rates through various national initiatives, but regional disparities remain. The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan plays a crucial role in improving school retention by enhancing infrastructure, providing residential hostels, hiring and training teachers, and offering free learning materials. The Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya scheme ensures residential schooling for girls from marginalized communities, while the Mid-Day Meal Scheme (now PM POSHAN) boosts attendance by addressing nutritional needs.

Despite these efforts, some states continue to struggle. Bihar and Assam have seen rising dropout rates between 2019 and 2024, while Karnataka and Rajasthan also report declines in school retention. In contrast, Kerala and Tamil Nadu have achieved near 100% school completion rates due to consistent educational policies and better infrastructure.

The government continues to focus on targeted interventions, particularly in states with higher dropout rates, to ensure all children have access to quality education.
