India and Japan recently formalized loan agreements amounting to 191.736 billion Japanese yen, supporting six diverse projects under Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA). These initiatives focus on urban transport, aquaculture, forest management, and biodiversity conservation, reinforcing the long-standing economic collaboration between the two nations.
The agreements were signed in New Delhi between the Government of India and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Among the key projects, the Tamil Nadu Investment Promotion Program (Phase 3) is set to receive JPY 36.114 billion to attract foreign investments and enhance manufacturing skills among local youth. The Delhi Mass Rapid Transport System Project (Phase 4) is allocated JPY 79.726 billion to expand the metro network, easing traffic congestion and reducing vehicular pollution, contributing to climate change mitigation. The Chennai Seawater Desalination Plant (II) will receive JPY 52.556 billion to improve water supply reliability, particularly benefiting underprivileged communities in the Chennai Metropolitan Area.
Additionally, JPY 8.280 billion is dedicated to the Capacity Enhancement for Effective Forest Management project, which focuses on training forest personnel, strengthening forest policy implementation, and advancing biodiversity conservation. In Assam, JPY 3.580 billion is allocated to the Aquaculture Promotion and Livelihood Improvement Project, aimed at boosting fish production and improving the livelihoods of fishery stakeholders through enhanced supply chains. The Punjab Biodiversity and Natural Resources Conservation Project is set to receive JPY 11.480 billion to promote biodiversity conservation and integrated wetland management, helping mitigate climate change impacts.
India and Japan have shared a strong bilateral relationship since 1958, with economic cooperation playing a crucial role in their strategic and global partnership.
