The vibrant city of Hyderabad and its surrounding districts in Telangana witnessed a significant decline in fire incidents during this year's Diwali celebrations, marking a positive shift in public safety and awareness. From Monday to Tuesday, the state's Disaster Response and Fire Services department received a total of 29 fire-related calls, a stark contrast to previous years.
Among these calls, the majority were minor incidents, with only three classified as medium severity. A notable exception was a serious blaze at an industrial unit in Sangareddy district, which likely attracted the attention of local authorities and residents. Other incidents included a fire at a scrap warehouse in the historic Bahadurpura area and a car fire caused by a firecracker explosion near Medipally Police Station. These incidents, though concerning, were effectively contained by the state's fire services.
The reduction in fire incidents is particularly impressive considering the increased availability of fireworks. The number of temporary licenses issued for firecracker shops has risen steadily over the past three years, from 6,439 in 2023 to 8,019 this year. Despite this surge in firecracker sales, the number of fires during Diwali has plummeted, with just 29 cases this year compared to 164 in 2023. This remarkable improvement can be attributed to heightened public awareness and the tireless efforts of Telangana's firefighters.
"Our firefighters and control room staff were on high alert throughout the festival, ensuring a swift response to any emergencies," said a senior official from the Fire Services department. This proactive approach, combined with increased public vigilance, has led to a safer Diwali, allowing residents to enjoy the festivities without the shadow of fire-related hazards.
