In a devastating turn of events, a routine journey turned into a fiery nightmare for passengers on a private bus travelling from Hyderabad to Bengaluru. The bus, carrying 41 people, including the driver, caught fire after a collision with a motorcycle in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh, resulting in the tragic loss of 20 lives.
The incident, which occurred at midnight, left little chance for escape as the fire engulfed the bus swiftly. The Kurnool Range DIG, Koya Praveen, described the harrowing scene, stating that 19 bodies were retrieved from the charred remains of the bus, while the biker's body was found in the mortuary. The bus door, jammed due to a short circuit, prevented many from fleeing, and the fire consumed the vehicle within minutes. The majority of the survivors are young adults aged between 25 and 35.
The cause of the fire was a collision with a two-wheeler, which resulted in the motorcycle being dragged underneath the bus with its fuel cap open, igniting the blaze. The intensity of the fire was such that several bodies were charred beyond recognition, necessitating forensic DNA identification.
As the nation mourns this tragic loss, top officials, including President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and political leaders like Rahul Gandhi, have expressed their condolences. The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, N Chandrababu Naidu, and his Telangana counterpart, A Revanth Reddy, also shared their anguish over the incident. The focus now shifts to the ongoing investigation and providing support to the survivors and the families of the deceased.
