Telangana Cracks Down on Bus Safety After Deadly Fire

The recent Kurnool bus tragedy, claiming 19 lives, has sparked a swift response from the Telangana Transport Department. In the aftermath of this devastating incident, the department has launched an extensive safety inspection campaign, targeting private travel buses across the state. The crackdown, initiated on Saturday, aims to identify and rectify safety violations, ensuring such tragedies are prevented in the future.

On Friday, a bus inferno in Kurnool resulted in the loss of 19 passengers, prompting immediate action from transport authorities. The department, now on high alert, has deployed teams to conduct rigorous checks at major highways and bus stops. These inspections focus on fire safety equipment, medical provisions, and adherence to safety regulations, particularly targeting buses arriving from Andhra Pradesh.

The initial inspections have yielded concerning results, with five buses booked for safety violations. One bus, previously involved in an accident, was seized due to a broken mirror, while another was detained at Chintalakunta for non-compliance. The Rachakonda commissionerate's review reveals a staggering 13,934 challans issued to private buses for various violations since January 2023. The most common offences include unauthorised entry, parking violations, and signal-jumping, with a notable increase in challans over the past three years.

The Transport Department's heightened vigilance sends a clear message about its commitment to road safety. By targeting hotspots and enforcing regulations, the authorities aim to significantly reduce unsafe practices. The ongoing crackdown, with its emphasis on thorough inspections and strict adherence to rules, is a proactive step towards safeguarding passengers and preventing future tragedies on Telangana's roads.
