Hyderabad Constable's Quick Response Foils Rs 5 Lakh Scam

In a city where cybercrime is becoming increasingly sophisticated, the Hyderabad City Police have once again demonstrated their vigilance and expertise in thwarting online fraud. A recent incident involving a pensioner's close call with digital scammers highlights the growing threat and the police's crucial role in safeguarding citizens.

A senior citizen, while attempting to submit his life certificate to his bank, inadvertently dialed a number listed by cybercriminals posing as bank officials. These fraudsters, employing social engineering tactics, convinced the unsuspecting victim to install a malicious application, granting them remote access to his mobile device. The scammers then initiated a series of unauthorized transactions, draining Rs.10 lakh from the pensioner's account.

However, the story took a positive turn when the victim promptly reported the incident to the Cyber Crime Police Station. Constable N. Srikanth Naik, a vigilant officer, guided the victim through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP). This swift action led to the removal of the malicious app and the discovery that the fraudulent transactions were routed through a payment gateway. The gateway's nodal officer, Harshavardhan Rao, acted quickly to block Rs.5 lakh, ensuring the victim's partial relief.

"The sophistication of this scam, where the APK could intercept OTPs and hijack WhatsApp accounts, is alarming," said Constable Naik. "It underscores the need for enhanced public awareness and proactive measures to counter such threats." This incident serves as a stark reminder of the evolving nature of cybercrime and the importance of timely reporting and expert intervention.
