In a significant blow to Hyderabad's criminal underworld, the city's police have dismantled a major counterfeit currency racket, arresting eight individuals and seizing fake currency worth Rs 4.75 lakhs. This operation, a joint effort by the Mehdipatnam police and the Commissioners Task Force, highlights the growing sophistication of criminal enterprises and the challenges faced by law enforcement.
The mastermind behind this illicit scheme, Kasthuri Ramesh Babu, a 35-year-old car mechanic, had honed his skills in the art of counterfeiting. His previous encounters with the law in Gujarat and Hyderabad did not deter him from setting up a new operation in his home in Tandur. Ramesh Babu's method was meticulous. He would scan genuine currency notes, digitally manipulate them, and print the fakes on bond paper, even adding a fake security thread with green gift wrap paper. This attention to detail resulted in high-quality counterfeits that could easily deceive the unsuspecting public.
The distribution network, orchestrated through social media platforms like Instagram, was equally sophisticated. Ramesh Babu attracted customers with a lucrative exchange rate, offering four fake notes for every real one. The counterfeit money then changed hands through multiple dealers, each reducing the exchange rate until it reached the streets, where Syed Altamash Ahmed circulated the fake currency.
"This operation demonstrates the adaptability and resourcefulness of criminal enterprises," said Deputy Commissioner G Chandra Mohan, emphasizing the importance of public awareness and vigilance. "We commend the efforts of our officers and will continue to work tirelessly to maintain the integrity of our currency and the safety of our citizens."
As the suspects face justice, this case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against economic crimes and the need for constant innovation in law enforcement strategies.
