In a significant victory against online piracy, the Telangana Police have dismantled a massive movie piracy operation, arresting its alleged mastermind, Immadi Ravi. This crackdown reveals a sophisticated network of digital theft and fraud, impacting not just the Telugu film industry but also countless unsuspecting users.
The arrest, which took place on November 15 in Hyderabad, is the culmination of meticulous cybercrime surveillance. Ravi's iBomma network, with its 65 mirror websites, had become a formidable force in the piracy underworld, causing an estimated loss of 3,700 crore to the Telugu film industry in 2024 alone. The police have uncovered a vast digital library of 21,000 pirated films, including classics and recent releases, ready for illegal distribution.
Investigations reveal a chilling aspect of this operation: the exploitation of user data. Ravi is accused of harvesting personal information from approximately 50 lakh users through embedded trackers and ad networks. This data was then allegedly monetized through illegal channels, including online betting promotions, generating an estimated 20 crore in illicit earnings.
Telangana Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar emphasized the risks to users, stating, "Piracy is not risk-free for consumers. Users risk identity theft, hacking, and financial fraud." This warning underscores the dual nature of the operation, targeting both the industry's revenue and users' digital security. With further arrests expected, the case highlights the growing sophistication of cybercrime and the need for robust enforcement and user awareness.
