Hyderabad's Cybercrime Help Desk: Revolutionising Victim Support

In a significant step towards efficient cybercrime management, the Hyderabad Police have unveiled an innovative help desk, Cyber Mitra (C-Mitra), to streamline the often cumbersome process of filing cybercrime complaints. This initiative aims to transform the way victims report online fraud, offering a more accessible and time-saving alternative to traditional police station visits.

The launch of C-Mitra, a 24-member call centre, promises to revolutionise the complaint registration process. Currently, only a fraction of the complaints received through the national cybercrime helpline and portal are converted into FIRs, a mere 18%. The Hyderabad Police Commissioner, VC Sajjanar, has set an ambitious target of a 100% conversion rate, demonstrating a commitment to ensuring every victim's voice is heard. This system is designed to proactively reach out to victims, a significant shift from the traditional reactive approach.

The process is straightforward: the C-Mitra team contacts victims, gathers information, and generates a draft complaint using AI. This draft is then shared via WhatsApp, ensuring convenience and accessibility. Once approved, the victim signs and submits the complaint, either physically or, in the future, digitally. This streamlined process not only saves victims' time but also allows police resources to be directed more effectively towards investigations.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Crimes), M Srinivasulu, emphasised the system's efficiency, stating, "Our trained staff will ensure victims' grievances are promptly addressed, and their consent is obtained before any official action." This new help desk is a significant stride towards a more victim-centric approach in cybercrime management, potentially setting a precedent for other cities to follow. With the increasing prevalence of cybercrime, such initiatives are crucial in building public trust and confidence in law enforcement.
