Kerala's Plan to Tackle Substance Abuse: A Cadet Programme for All

In a bold move to combat the rising issue of substance abuse among children, the Kerala Assembly Committee has proposed a comprehensive strategy, with a particular focus on the Student Police Cadet (SPC) programme. The committee, led by U. Prathibha, MLA, aims to empower students and provide them with the tools to resist the allure of drugs and other addictive substances.

The SPC programme, currently operating in select schools, has shown promise in fostering discipline and awareness among students. The committee's report recommends expanding this initiative to every government, aided, and private school in the state, creating a unified front against the growing drug problem. This expansion will ensure that no student is left vulnerable, providing them with the knowledge and support to make informed choices.

Furthermore, the committee suggests implementing a similar scheme, the College Police Cadet programme, in higher education institutions. This proposal aims to ease the transition from school to college, a period when students are particularly susceptible to substance abuse. By offering guidance and mentorship, the programme aims to create a supportive environment for adolescents.

To address the root causes of substance abuse, the committee emphasizes the importance of mental health support. It urges the government to expedite the appointment of counsellors in schools and hostels, ensuring early identification and intervention for students facing challenges such as borderline personality disorder or family issues. Additionally, training teachers to become primary counsellors will create a network of support within the education system.

With these measures, Kerala aims to create a safer, more aware generation, fostering a culture of responsibility and well-being.
