Hyderabad: A major drug bust in Sainikpuri has led to the arrest of Nigerian national Emmanuel Bediako alias Maxwell, who was caught with high-grade narcotics valued at ₹1.25 crore. The Telangana Anti-Narcotics Bureau (TGANB) seized 150 grams of ‘celebrity cocaine’ and 1,100 ecstasy pills during the operation aimed at cracking down on international drug syndicates.
Who Is Emmanuel Bediako?
Emmanuel, 34, hails from Enugu State in Nigeria and has been involved in transnational drug trafficking for years. He entered India on three different occasions using forged documents and fake identities, including both Nigerian and Ghanaian passports. His visits were facilitated by Nigerian drug kingpin Onyeisi Romanus Ikechukwu, also known as Romey, who coordinated his movements, finances, and drug operations.
Timeline of Emmanuel’s Drug Operations in India:
First Visit (2013–2022): Entered India using a fake identity via Bangalore and operated in Goa under the alias Maxwell. Earned ₹40 lakh in drug commissions.
Second Visit (2023–2024): Re-entered India with a new identity, continued operations in Goa, and made an additional ₹20 lakh.
Third Visit (2025): Entered with a Ghanaian passport under the name Bediako Emmanuel, backed by a deposit of 2 million Nigerian Naira. Initially returned to Goa before shifting his base to Hyderabad to expand his drug network under Romey’s instructions.
Drug Trade and Money Laundering Network
Emmanuel specialized in distributing high-purity cocaine and MDMA (ecstasy), selling cocaine at ₹25,000 per gram and ecstasy at ₹6,000 per pill. His transactions spanned over 150 banking transfers involving Nigerian and Indian contacts. Drug proceeds were funneled back to Nigeria through a complex money laundering network involving hawala operators and Nigerian nationals in Mumbai.
Photos of narcotics, bank account details from institutions such as GTBank, Access Bank, and Zenith Bank were recovered from Emmanuel’s phone, further revealing the international scale of the operation.
Expansion Plans in Hyderabad
Following orders from Romey, Emmanuel had recently moved to Hyderabad and was staying at a friend’s residence in Sainikpuri when he was arrested. His goal was to set up a local drug network by recruiting peddlers and building a customer base in the city.
Police Appeal to the Public
TGANB has urged citizens, particularly youth and parents, to remain alert and report drug-related activities. Residents in areas with high foreign occupancy like Sainikpuri, Tolichowki, Banjara Hills, and Jubilee Hills are advised to comply with foreign registration norms and inform police of any suspicious individuals.
