The Hyderabad City Wi-Fi Project (Hy-Fi), launched as part of the Telangana Government’s Digital Telangana initiative, has become a key component in the state's digitization efforts. Introduced in 2016 as part of the first Information and Communications Technology (ICT) policy, Hy-Fi was designed to provide easy access to the internet in public spaces across Hyderabad, supporting the government's vision for a more connected, digital society.
In 2017, the pilot phase of the Hy-Fi Project was launched in collaboration with Internet Service Providers (ISPs). This initial rollout covered approximately 100 public locations across Hyderabad, including malls, tourist spots, government offices, police stations, and educational institutions. The pilot was a huge success, giving citizens access to free Wi-Fi in these high-traffic areas and encouraging greater participation in the digital economy.
Following the successful pilot, the Telangana Government significantly expanded the project. Today, Hy-Fi covers over 3,000 locations across Hyderabad, with Wi-Fi hotspots at 47 metro stations, 400 government schools, hospitals, public libraries, basti dawakhanas, and popular shopping centers. These strategic Wi-Fi zones provide free access to internet services, helping bridge the digital divide and facilitating online access for people from all walks of life.
Hy-Fi not only supports educational and public service sectors but also enhances connectivity in key urban areas. As Hyderabad continues to grow as a tech hub, this initiative is part of the city’s drive toward becoming a truly digital metropolis, supporting the state's ambitions for innovation and inclusivity.
