Bank harassment alleged, couple dies after consuming poison in Punjab

A Ludhiana-based couple has died after allegedly consuming poison, a sensational twist to a long-running dispute with a private bank over pending loan payments for a car. Though the incident occurred on Tuesday evening, it came to light only after the autopsy report revealed the cause of death, prompting the police to register a case against the bank and its recovery agent.

The couple, Hardeep Singh (42) and Sukhwinder Kaur (38), had taken a loan of Rs 5.18 lakh from the bank for a car in 2015. They had paid 55 EMIs regularly, but according to their family's claims, a single delayed payment this month triggered harassment and threats from the bank's recovery team.

On Tuesday, the couple's 11-year-old son witnessed the recovery agent, who was at the couple's house to demand payment, aggressively pursuing them. When the boy went to his room, he heard his parents consume something and subsequently fell ill. Both were rushed to the hospital but were declared dead on arrival.

The police have registered a case against the bank and its recovery agent under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) and are investigating the matter. The incident has drawn attention to the abusive recovery practices of banks and the desperate steps some take to cope with the pressure.

In light of this tragic incident, there are concerns about the need for stricter regulations to prevent undue harassment and the need for more empathy and understanding in financial matters.
