The Role of Telangana’s Digital Media Wing

Established in June 2014, the Digital Media Wing of the IT, E&C Department plays a critical role in connecting citizens with the Telangana Government through various digital platforms. Its primary functions include managing official social media accounts, ensuring authentic communication, and increasing citizen engagement. The wing oversees the official Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube channels of Telangana's CMO and other key ministries, providing live webcasts of important events, and offering verification services to prevent fraudulent accounts.

In addition to social media, the Digital Media Wing manages the state’s major web portals, including the official Telangana government website, IT portal, and CMO website. It ensures compliance with the Guidelines for Telangana Government Websites (GTGW) to make online platforms accessible to people with disabilities.

The Open Data Initiative, launched in September 2016, aims to make government data publicly available in a machine-readable format. The wing also actively organizes hackathons to encourage data enthusiasts and developers to solve civic challenges using government data.

Efforts to promote Telugu content in government websites, under the T-Web Project, highlight the importance of localizing content. The Digital Media Wing is working alongside IIIT Hyderabad to boost contributions to the Telugu Wikipedia.

To combat fake news, the wing launched a dedicated fact-checking website in 2020 and maintains a Twitter account to raise awareness about misinformation, amplifying the message with hashtags like #SayNoToFakeNews and #SwachhSocialMedia. These initiatives underscore the wing’s commitment to maintaining a safe, transparent digital environment.
