The National Commission for Women (NCW) is taking suo motu cognizance of the alleged gang rape of a 24-year-old law student in Kolkata on January 9. The Commission has demanded an immediate probe and medical exam of the victim.
Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has directed a joint secretary-level officer to visit the victim in the hospital and extend all possible help to her and her family.
The NCW will meet the victim and her family likely on Monday, January 16, 2023, after the victim sufficiently recovers.
According to media reports, the victim was brutally gang-raped by five men after the vehicle she was traveling in with her friend was intercepted in a secluded area of Kolkata. The accused tied up the victim's friend and left her on the roadside before taking the victim to the terrace of a nearby house where the rape occurred. The victim was subsequently dumped on the roadside before being discovered and taken to a hospital in Kolkata.
Four of the accused have been arrested, and an investigation is ongoing to track down the prime accused, who is still at large.
This heinous crime has outraged people across the country, and the NCW insists on a thorough and expeditious investigation so that the victim and her family can get the justice they deserve.
