Passenger Oxygen Masks Deployed on Mumbai-Bound Flight

Passengers on an Ethiopian Airlines flight from Addis Ababa to Mumbai had a frightening experience as some encountered difficulties breathing, and oxygen masks were deployed during the flight on Sunday. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, which was flying ET640, experienced a mid-air depressurization, according to the airline. Seven passengers needed medical attention upon landing in Mumbai, India.

The airline said in a statement on Monday that the Independent Directorate General of Civil Aviation (IDGCA), India's aviation regulator, has begun an investigation into the incident. The statement also noted that the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) in India took possession of the aircraft for further investigations.

According to the statement, the aircraft's cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder were removed and delivered to the AAIB. "Ethiopian Airlines has been in touch with the concerned passengers and will do everything possible to assist the investigation. The airline will also conduct an internal investigation," the statement said.

This incident comes just less than a month after another Boeing 787, a Delta aircraft, experienced a similar mid-air depressurization incident. The Delta flight was flying from Atlanta to Tokyo when the crew had to make a sudden descent to around 10,000 feet, causing some passenger injuries.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is still investigating that incident.

The Ethiopian Airlines incident underscores the dangers that can still arise even as flying has become commonplace and generally safe.
