Bengaluru's Assistant Commissioner of Police, Vikash Kumar Vikash, has had his suspension order revoked by the CAT, questioning the legality and rationale of the disciplinary action taken against him for the Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede, which saw the deaths of two teenagers.
The tragic incident, which occurred during the overcrowded procession of the Kaveri River festival at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in November, saw the suspension of Vikash, along with five other police officials and two government officials. The suspension orders were widely criticized as biased and insufficient, leading to appeals from multiple departments.
In a statement appealing his suspension, Vikash said that he and his team had worked tirelessly to manage a crowd of over a million people and, in doing so, adhered to their duty as police officers with no negligence or misconduct.
The order issued by the Tribunal states that 'the imposition of such a drastic punishment as suspension from service on the work discipline grounds is arbitrary and against the principles of natural justice.'
The case is expected to continue, with inquiries into possible negligence and misconduct by officials on the day of the tragedy.
