Infosys flags 'overtime' as criticism mounts against government for Defense deals
The Indian government has faced mounting criticism over its defense deals, with opposition politicians and experts alleging cronyism and corruption.
Now, Infosys, one of the country's top IT companies, has warned that it may have to pay a fine of $7.5 million for allegedly undervaluing imports of software products for tax purposes. This revelation flags concerns over the government's handling of its largest military contract in decades.
The defense deal, initially valued at $8.8 billion, was for the procurement of 111 utility helicopters for the Indian Navy and 72,000 lightweight howitzers for the Indian Army.
The opposition, however, has alleged that the deals were overpriced and that the contracts were modified to favor specific companies.
Earlier this month, the Opposition called for a parliamentary debate on the defense deals, citing the need for transparency and accountability.
The government, meanwhile, has denied the allegations, claiming that the deals were conducted transparently and in line with the country's defense procurement procedures.
The opposition party, Indian National Congress has accused the Modi government of favoring specific businessmen with the defense deals.
It remains to be seen how the government will address these concerns and allegations.
