Sudhir Hasija: The Entrepreneur on the Rise

Sudhir Hasija, Chairman of Karbonn Mobiles, is a shining example of how persistence and strategic risk-taking can lead to success. Born to a government clerk in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, Hasija’s journey started modestly. After finishing his Class 10 exams, he moved to Hyderabad, where he worked at a machine tools company for three years, saving up just Rs 3,000. He used these savings to start his own business selling TV accessories in Chennai. Despite the challenges, including working in harsh conditions and staying in low-cost lodgings, Hasija's perseverance paid off, allowing him to expand across southern India.

In 1996, as the telecom market began to boom, Hasija secured a contract as the telecom hardware distributor for Alcatel-Lucent. His success continued with lucrative deals with global brands like Nokia and Samsung, making him one of the top distributors in India.

In 2009, with the rise of homegrown mobile phone companies in India, Hasija made a bold move by founding Karbonn Mobiles, a joint venture with his long-time friend Pradeep Jain. Using his savings and a loan from IDBI Bank, he launched Karbonn in Bangalore, and within a few years, the company had captured a 4.5% market share in India. His focus on offering value-for-money phones, like dual-SIM devices with longer battery lives, helped Karbonn stand out in a competitive market.

As India’s mobile market grew rapidly, Hasija aimed to expand Karbonn's reach and compete with major global players. While facing stiff competition from other Indian brands like Micromax, he leveraged his experience to innovate. Karbonn’s focus on providing excellent after-sales service, high visibility even in rural markets, and a strong distribution network set it apart.

To stay competitive, Hasija is making strategic moves, including purchasing a South Korean cellphone design house for $40 million, which will help Karbonn expand its product offerings. Karbonn also plans to launch affordable tablets to compete with global giants like Apple and Samsung. By understanding customer needs and managing supply chains effectively, Hasija has positioned Karbonn as a strong contender in both the Indian and international markets.
