Bangalore woman leading infamous al-Qaeda cell arrested

Shama Parveen had reportedly established a formidable network across India and Nepal and was recruiting youngsters aspiring to join AQIS.

A 30-year-old woman from Bangalore, Shama Parveen, was arrested by the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) for allegedly leading an Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) terror module, as per recent reports. The arrest stems from an investigation into the 2019 bombings in Surat.

The AQIS module was said to have been operating in Gujarat and other states such as Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Nepal. Among other crimes, they planned to target religious sites and gatherings in the country.

Shama, who is a resident of Bengaluru, is believed to have recruited youngsters wanting to join AQIS for militant training. She had established a strong network across India and Nepal, utilizing social media platforms to connect with aspiring terrorists.

The Gujarat ATS stated that Shama will be produced before a court and that the investigation is ongoing.

This incident sheds light on the presence of radicalization and terrorism cells in India and the detrimental role of women in facilitating these activities.

This is not the first time that India's antiterrorism forces have unraveled the shocking reality of terrorist cells operating under the radar. This begs the question: What deeper roots lie hidden behind such activities in our peaceful-seeming country?
