Border personnel to get climate-resistant posts

Relief for Indian soldiers battling harsh Himalayan terrain and extreme cold temperatures

According to a government document seen by CNN-News18, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) intends to hire a consultant to design border posts (BOP) for high-altitude regions at a cost of Rs 1.25 crore. The initiative plans to make the posts climate-resistant and relieve soldiers stationed there. The ITBP is a paramilitary unit established to secure India's border with China.

The document states that the consultant will evaluate the effectiveness of insulation and house heating solutions currently in use at the border posts. They will also be in charge of preparing detailed designs for BOPs in high-altitude regions, emphasizing climate-resilient construction. The initiative intends to provide relief to jawans battling severe Himalayan terrain and extreme cold conditions.

The plan comes as India and China continue to dispute territory in the Himalayas. The two countries have a long history of border disputes and engaged in a deadly clash in 2020. Since then, both nations have maintained a strong military presence along the border.

Soldiers posted in high-altitude areas, such as the Himalayas, have to endure extreme weather conditions, making it difficult for them to perform their duties and impacting their physical and mental health. In recent years, India has embarked on projects to improve living conditions for soldiers posted along the China border. The consultant is expected to begin work in February 2023.
