"It's like a madhouse here with everyone fighting over water. It's worse than fighting over food." These were the words of one resident of Ankur Vihar, Ghaziabad, whose video has now gone viral, after he filmed himself being brutally beaten by society staff over an argument about water shortage.
The altercation, caught on CCTV cameras, shows the man being escorted out of the building by security staff, who then proceed to repeatedly hit and thrash him. Society residents claim that the man, identified as Raj Kumar, had allegedly rushed towards the society's general manager, Sachin, and tried to assault him over the water shortage issue. However, the video shows Kumar only attempting to draw attention to the issue and pleading with security staff to let him finish, before being violently overridden.
"I just wanted to tell them that we have no water at all. Just a little bit for drinking. The rest they are just wasting on lawns and common areas. I just wanted them to listen...," Kumar told local media, showing his injuries.
Police have now stepped in, and are investigating the matter. In the meantime, the society's management has filed a complaint against Kumar, accusing him of physically assaulting the manager.
"We have formed teams to ensure that law and order is maintained in the area, and to investigate the matter," said Sanjay Kumar, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Indirapuram.
With temperatures rising across North India, and water shortages becoming an increasingly dire problem, it's clear that arguments and even violence over water are going to become an increasingly common occurrence.
