A horrific double tragedy has struck Uttar Pradesh, with a brother shaving his sister's head and strangling her on the day meant for celebrating her safety, before killing her lover the previous day. The Families of the young couple were against their relationship due to their community and caste differences, and the couple had attempted to elope on several occasions. On the day of Raksha Bandhan, the sister's brother decided to take matters into his own hands and punish his sister. After killing her lover, he shaved her head as punishment, and then strangled her, committing another horrific crime on one of the happiest days of the year for brothers and sisters across the country. Police say that the brother was enraged by the attempted elopions, and this is what triggered the terrible sequence of events.
The pair were residents of Jhansi's Babina village and the brother, identified as 21-year-old Akash Singh, has been taken into police custody.
The girl's body was found in a field in the early hours of the morning on August 22, 2022, and police suspect that she was killed by her brother later that night. On August 21, the day before the sister's murder, her boyfriend had gone missing, and police later found his body in a field nearby.
The double tragedy has shaken the community and serves as a grim reminder of the darkness that can lurk behind even the happiest of holidays.
"She had affection for him, but their relationship had been deteriorating for some time. Despite the fact that their families did not approve of the match, they attempted to elope together multiple times," Superintendent of Police (SP) of Jhansi, Manoj Kumar Singh, told ANI.
Akash Singh has been arrested and charged with murder, and investigations are still ongoing.
