How did police bust a cannabis shop in Ekurhuleni? Technical tip-off.

A joint law enforcement operation in Ekurhuleni resulted in the closure of an illegal cannabis shop and the arrest of a 21-year-old man, the municipality has confirmed.

According to the municipality, the EMPD's Drug Enforcement Unit, the K9 Unit, and SAPS officers carried out Operation Shanela on August 15.

They raided a premises on Eastleigh Street in Edenvale suspected of selling illicit substances.

Acting on a tip-off, police asked for cultivation and manufacturing documents upon entering the shop, says the municipality.

The 21-year-old could not produce them, and officers confiscated cannabis products, including 68 red containers of dagga, 55 blue containers, 23 grey containers, four orange containers, and 150 ready-rolled joints, with an estimated street value of R10,000.

The man was arrested and detained at the Edenvale Police Station.

He will appear in the Edenvale Magistrates Court on charges of dealing in dagga.

The municipality commended the operation, saying it reflected the municipality's ongoing efforts to combat the trade of illicit substances and safeguard communities.

Police in South Africa arrested more than 2,100 people for dealing and using cannabis in the first six months of 2022, according to recent statistics.
