A Indian YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra, arrested in May on suspicion of espionage, has had her judicial custody extended until September 3rd by a court in Hisar.
Since her arrest, Malhotra, who has over 3.5 million subscribers on YouTube, has been held in police custody. The police allege that she was attempting to reveal sensitive information to a foreign intelligence agency and that spying charges against her are true.
The 23-year-old YouTuber was presented to the court on Monday, August 8, via video conference from the Hisar police station. The court, which deemed her remand valid, extended her judicial custody, according to the police statement.
Malhotra's lawyer, Shivam Mahana, claimed that the YouTuber had been targeted because of her controversial podcasts and her criticism of mainstream media and some members of the ruling party. Mahana said that the espionage investigation was a blatant attempt to silence her voice but maintained that the charges were untrue and that Malhotra was being framed.
