Guam District Court Judge Frances Tydingco-Gatewood has sentenced Daniel Thomas Sanchez to 63 months in federal prison, imposing a five-year sentence for firearm and drug charges.
Sanchez, aged 36, had previously pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine hydrochloride. The judge dismissed other charges as part of his plea deal.
The sentence comes after an October 2023 police search of a Dededo property uncovered Sanchez and a shotgun in a car. Four more shells were found in the car. The subsequent search of a vehicle in March 2024, in which Sanchez was a passenger, led to the discovery of multiple firearms, methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia.
Sanchez's criminal history category could have justified a sentence of between 51 and 63 months, with the prosecution seeking a 78-month sentence, and Sanchez's defense seeking the lower end of the plea deal. The prosecution argued that Sanchez's history of trauma should have led him to value human life, not engage in risky behavior. Sanchez apologized and expressed remorse, hoping to turn his time in prison into a positive experience.
He added that he had seen the error of his ways and wanted to become a law-abiding citizen. The judge acknowledged his difficult life but pointed out that at 36, he had spent half his life in and out of prison and shouldn't continue that pattern.
Sanchez was also sentenced to three years of supervised release and credit for time served. The judge recommended that he be placed in several prison programs, including drug and mental health treatment, vocational, and educational training. She also recommended that he be placed in the state of Oregon, where his mother lives.
The judge concluded by wishing him luck and encouraging him to continue working on himself for his two children.
