US Coast Guard Donates Equipment to Philippine Counterparts

Philippine maritime security received a significant boost with the United States' recent donation of PHP 1.9 million (USD 34,500) worth of equipment to the local Coast Guard's Fleet Maintenance and Repair Group (MRG) Workshop at Sangley Point, Cavite. The 18 August 2025 handover, facilitated by the US Department of State's International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) bureau, is expected to enhance the Philippine Coast Guard's (PCG) capacity to maintain and repair its fleet.

According to PCG Fleet Commander, Rear Admiral Rommel Supangan, the assistance reflects the strength of the US-Philippine partnership in promoting maritime security. Director Kate Richie of the US Embassy INL echoed this sentiment, promising continued support for the MRG as they work to fully operate their maintenance facility and address vessel sustainment requirements.

The PHP 54 million (USD 950,000) funded MRG Workshop at Sangley Point, inaugurated in May 2024, complements a similar facility in the Manila Port Area. The workshop covers 400 square meters and assists in maintenance and repair capabilities for small boats and larger patrol vessels, crucial for the country's maritime law enforcement and defense.

The INL is planning additional support for PCG vessel maintenance efforts in the coming year, including technical training programs, maintenance and logistic systems planning, and equipment donations for vessel operating stations.

With this latest donation, the United States has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Philippines' maritime security capabilities, building upon the strong bilateral relationship.
