Authorities in Yobe State, Nigeria, have made a significant dent in the local prostitution trade, arresting over 300 women and their clients during a recent operation led by the chairman of Damaturu local government area.
The operation, which was coordinated jointly by several authorities, including the police, DSS, and NDLEA, was carried out in reaction to Governor Mai Mala Buni's zero-tolerance directive regarding drug abuse and the associated rise in criminal activity.
The raid on drug hubs and brothels across the state capital and its surroundings resulted in the confiscation of illicit drugs and the arrest of numerous suspects.
In a separate joint operation between the Yobe State Police Command and the state government, a consignment of alcohol was confiscated, along with 50 women and 34 men who were engaged in prostitution.
Dr Yahuza Hamza, the chairman of the Yobe State Hisbah Commission, explained that the operation was aimed at eliminating immoral and antisocial activities that threaten the moral fabric of society.
He added that all the properties involved in the violations were sealed, and all suspects were detained and will be prosecuted accordingly.
This development marks a heightened phase in the statewide campaign against drug abuse and criminal activity, and authorities are encouraging the public to support the initiative and report any suspicious activity in their neighbourhoods.
