Dubai takes on cybercrime with a GCC workshop focused on preventing the misuse of social media for drug promotion.
The emirate, along with Dubai Police's Hemaya International Centre and the GCC Criminal Information Centre on Drugs, will host the "Preventing the Exploitation of Social Media for Drug Promotion" workshop in October. The event aligns with the GCC Ministers of Interior's 41st meeting resolutions in November 2022.
The authorities aim to curb drug trafficking online by creating strategies and methods and exchanging expertise and experiences. The workshop should result in recommendations to improve capabilities to confront this issue and protect social media platforms from any related harm.
Social media companies operating in the UAE will be invited to the workshop to cooperate in developing joint recommendations and achieving mutual goals. These include safeguarding users, combating harmful content, enhancing transparency, protecting privacy, and strengthening social responsibility.
Dubai Police's Director of the General Department of Anti-Narcotics, Brigadier Khalid bin Muwaiza, emphasized the workshop's importance in reinforcing the principle of shared social responsibility in combating drugs. Dr. Brigadier Abdulrahman Sharaf Al Memari, Director of the Hemaya International Centre, stressed that the initiative aims to ensure that social media continues to serve as a positive tool for moral and human value exchange across societies.
This move comes as Asian governments are investing more in monitoring and controlling online platforms to regulate content creators and curb misinformation.
