Trafficking bust stops dangerous drugs, weapons from hitting the streets

A routine traffic stop in Priceville led to a significant bust of dangerous drugs, weapons, and trafficking activity.

Last night around 12:30 am, the Priceville Police Department conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 65 near the 334-mile marker. Officers had probable cause to search the vehicle, which revealed a startling array of illicit materials. Inside the car, officers found a fentanyl mixture liquid, marijuana, and a firearm. A subsequent investigation showed that the three occupants, two adults, and one child, were involved in trafficking these dangerous substances.

Among the charges faced by the adult passengers were drug trafficking, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, chemical endangerment of a child, and unlawful possession of marijuana. Officers promptly released the child to a guardian. One adult, Leshawn Demetrius Tate, a 36-year-old man from Birmingham, was taken into custody and booked at the Morgan County Jail.

Tate's bail is pending until a Morgan County Circuit Judge reviews the case. The possession of a firearm by a prohibited person charge may be pursued after authorities review Tate's criminal record. This offense carries a significant bond amount.

When asked about the traffic stop and its outcome, Officer Rory Thacker of the Priceville Police Department commented, "Crimes involving dangerous drugs and the illegal possession of firearms hurt our community and put lives at risk. We are committed to getting these substances and weapons off our streets and will actively pursue any leads to keep our residents safe."

This press release indicates that Tate is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The authorities' efforts resulted in significant arrests and an example of the police department's actions to keep the community safe from dangerous and illegal activities.
