Despite a continued nationwide decline in narcotics-related crimes, Punjab continues to grapple with such cases, accounting for nearly 14% of all cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act across India in 2024.
Recently released data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reveal that Punjab registered the second-highest number of NDPS Act cases in 2024, behind only Maharashtra. Moreover, the number of such cases in Punjab has more than doubled since 2019, with a 117% increase.
These findings underscore the persistent nature of the narcotics problem in Punjab despite ongoing measures to combat drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
"This is a concerning trend, and the state government must continue focusing on tackling this issue head-on," said a senior police officer. "Such cases have a significant impact on society and require a holistic and multi-pronged approach."
Punjab's struggle with narcotics-related crimes underscores the need for continued law enforcement focus and dedication to combating drug abuse and illicit trafficking, ensuring a safer and more secure state.
