Odisha CS Takes Strict Action against Narcotics Sale Near School Areas

Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja recently issued strict directives to prevent illegal drug trafficking and substance abuse throughout the state. The review meeting included senior officers from various departments, including police, education, social security, and health, to address growing concerns of drug abuse in the state, particularly around school areas.

Following recent raids near educational institutions where paan, tea, and variety stores sold ganja-laced cigarettes, the CS emphasized the importance of strong action to prevent the illegal sale, consumption, and trade of narcotics, focusing on school and college campuses.

Parents, teachers, principals, and police officers will form dedicated task forces to raise awareness among students, adopting a zero-tolerance policy towards drugs near educational institutions.

The state has seized 1,608 quintals of marijuana, 9.799 kg of brown sugar, and 26,874 bottles of liquid cough syrup, among other substances, leading to the registration of 385 cases and the arrest of 1,162 individuals by the end of July 2025.

Additionally, the extensive illegal cultivation of marijuana in various forests and its supply chain from different districts requires coordinated measures from the departments, led by the Home Department.

Extensive awareness campaigns and operations will be implemented in cities like Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, where drug trafficking and usage are increasing rapidly.

This news article highlights the state of Odisha's stringent measures against narcotics sales near school areas, attempting to create a drug-free environment for students and raise awareness among all stakeholders involved.
