India and the United States held their intersessional 2+2 dialogue on Wednesday, focusing on regional security, defence industrial cooperation, energy, and critical minerals. The talks were held under the US-India COMPACT framework, with officials discussing Russia's invasion of Ukraine and its impact on Afghanistan, as well focusing on strengthening cooperation on trade and economic issues.
"The United States and India underscored their commitment to democracy, human rights, and the rule of law," a joint statement released by the US Department of State declared.
The two sides also discussed "the consequences of Russia's unjustified war against Ukraine and its impact on the global food and energy crises," the statement added.
Talks between the two nations are being held "as close partners, mindful of shared democratic values, and international law," according to Indian Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra.
"Our dialogue today, which is taking place only a few weeks after the successful bilateral summit between our two countries, and on the eve of the G20 summit, shows the depth and intensity of our bilateral partnership," he said.
Earlier this week, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden discussed over the phone the "need to strengthen joint efforts to counter terrorism, and other shared priorities, including the climate crisis, global food security, and the crisis in Ukraine."
The two leaders are expected to meet in person at the G20 summit, which begins on Saturday in Bali.
