Bullying in any form must be addressed and stopped, whether it happens in a chat room, on social media, in the playground, or in the classroom.

According to a recent study by PewResearch, one-in-three teens have experienced cyber bullying, and 20 percent say they have been victims of traditional bullying. Since October is National Bullying Prevention Month, schools across the country are now tackling cyber bullying and the broader issues of digital citizenship.

It's good that schools are tackling cyber bullying, but they also must not overlook bullying offline. Traditional forms of bullyingsuch as physical, verbal, and social bullyingare just as harmful as cyber bullying. All types of bullying can have long-term psychological effects on children, harm their academic performance, and lead to increased absenteeism, decreased reported student attendance, and increased student turnover rates when left unaddressed.

We all have a responsibility to educate ourselves and our children on the implications of all forms of bullying. Let's not forget the effects on the bystanders who may be chuckling on the playground or scrolling on their screens witnessing the bullying, too. We all have a responsibility to stop, report, and prevent bullying, both on and offline.

Let's make it a priority in our schools and homes so our children feel safe everywhere.
