Late night raves and booming EDM music, hushed conversations, and an air of secrecythis could describe a scene from one of many movies depicting a covert narcotics transaction. However, this was the scene recently in Hyderabad, where narcotics officials raided a service apartment, disrupting a rave party in progress. The raid highlights India's growing narcotics problem.
Six individuals, comprising businessmen, a homemaker, a software engineer, and an engineering student, were arrested in the raid. Officers seized a significant quantity of drugs, including 20 grams of cocaine, eight ecstasy pills weighing 20 grams, and three grams of MDMA. The narcotics were sourced from a courier service in Rajahmundry and circulated at parties in Hyderabad, farmhouses, and even in Goa.
The raid is a part of an intensified drive to curb the rising number of rave parties and drug trafficking in the region. Officials are currently looking to arrest the party's supplier, who is suspected to be from Bengaluru.
The incident points to a latent narcotics crisis in India, which arguably demands more proactive prevention strategies and greater public education to deter young people from experimenting with drugs.
