The former BJP legislator, who was the powerbroker in Amreli, and the former police superintendent were key conspirators in the murder, according to the court, which described the crime as "a blot on the justice system."
The court verdict stated, "It is shocking to note that the law enforcing agencies have misguided the court by providing false information regarding the investigation and misusing their power and political influence."
The court concluded that the crime was not premeditated, as the accused had allegedly planned to merely assault the victim, but it turned fatal as the victim, while attempting to escape, was shot dead by one of the defendants, who was a former pirate.
The court affirmed the conviction of the accused under Sections 302 and 120B of the Indian Penal Code, and Sections 7 and 25 of the Arms Act, sentencing them to life imprisonment and imposing a fine of Rs. 10 lakh each.
The court further ruled that the sentence would only commence from the time served by the defendants while awaiting trial, thereby denying any benefit for the period they had already served.
