Drug abuse continues to be a pervasive issue in India, and a recent awareness programme aimed to educate the public about its harmful effects. MPM Government First Grade College Karkala, in collaboration with the Excise Department of Udupi district, hosted the "Drug-Free India" programme, bringing together students and law enforcement officers.
The event was inaugurated by the superintendent of excise, Udupi district, Gurumurthy Palekar, who appealed to students to steer clear of dangerous substances. Drug abuse is a major problem in India, with a 2018 survey reporting that around two million people in the country suffer from alcohol use disorder, and around two lakh people die due to alcohol-related causes each year.
The event highlighted the negative physical and mental effects of drugs and alcohol and urged students to promote a drug-free society. Event attendees noted that more awareness programmes are needed to combat drug abuse and empower young people to resist social pressures and peer influence.
It is hoped that this event will spark change and encourage a healthier, more vibrant society.
