On Friday, Florida Atlantic University's Collegiate Recovery Community hosted its fifth annual Overdose Awareness Walk and Recovery Event to commemorate International Overdose Day. The walk, started in 2021 by Matthew Patterson and two other students, began at the Flagler Credit Union Stadium and ended at the Phyllis and Harvey School of Social Work Building, signifying the journey of recovery.
Patterson, a doctorate public administration student, and Mary Mistretta, a senior biological science major, both highlight the personal importance of raising awareness and advocating for recovery on campus. This event also distributed vital information on drug overdose prevention and handed out Narcan kits used to reverse the effects of a drug overdose to attendees.
Patterson, Mistretta, and Lisa Paja, a sophomore biological science major, all stress the importance of raising awareness around overdose and the possibility of recovery. This event aimed to create a safe and supportive community for those affected by addiction and promote the message that recovery is possible.
The walk culminated in Patterson's sharing of his recovery journey, a testament to the fact that one can overcome such challenges with the right support and resources.
This event aligns with the University Press' mission to inform and educate students about issues affecting campus and the greater community.
