Punjab anti-drugs operation

Over 750 locations across Punjab were raided on Wednesday as part of a large-scale police operation against organised drug crime, authorities said.

The raids, which were conducted in 150 towns and cities, were led by the state police's anti-drugs agency, according to director general Punjab Police Sidharth Chattopadhyay.

"This was not a one-off action, but part of our sustained campaign against the drug mafia," Chattopadhyay told media. "We have made arrests across the state today, but this is just the start."

Chattopadhyay did not disclose the number of arrests made during the raids, saying the investigation was still ongoing.

The raids came days after the Punjab government announced a new anti-drugs hotline number and promised to intensify its crackdown on illegal substances.

On Sunday, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said that the government would "not tolerate the menace of drugs, which has destroyed too many lives".

"No one will be spared, regardless of their political affiliations," he said.

According to reports, the state has seen a rapid rise in drug abuse since the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly among young people.

"Our operations will continue until we've rooted out this problem," Chattopadhyay said. "We will expand our efforts to break the supply chain and identify the sources of these drugs."

Another massive crackdown on drugs, this time across Punjab, is underway with the State Police conducting raids at over 750 places across the state on Wednesday. This operation, according to Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Siddharth Chattopadhyay, is not a one-off but a part of the polices sustained campaign against the drug mafia and their network.

Chattopadhyay said that the raids, which covered 150 towns and cities in the state, were led by the State Police Anti-Drug Agency and that the operation is still ongoing with many arrests made, according to a report in The Times of India.

This operation comes just days after the Punjab government announced a dedicated anti-drugs helpline number and promised to intensify its crackdown on the trade and supply of illegal substances in the state.
