In a shocking revelation, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has found discrepancies in the state's investigation into a police official accused of accepting a bribe and recovering illegal substances. The high court has taken serious exception to the state's selective action and ordered a probe by the Narcotics Control Bureau.
The case stems from a complaint filed in December 2020 by a woman who alleged that a police official and his team raided her home and found 10 kg of ganja. The official is said to have demanded Rs 20 lakh to drop the case and eventually agreed to Rs 16 lakh. The woman alleged that she paid Rs 13 lakh to the official through a mediator but when she tried to expose the official, he did not return for the remaining amount.
The high court noted that while the official was charged, the complainant and her husband were not booked under the NDPS Act despite their admission of possessing contraband. It stressed that if the allegations were true, it was a serious offence.
Considering the state's failure to adequately address these concerns, the court ordered the case to be referred to the Additional Director of the NCB's Chandigarh Zonal Unit for further investigation.
Justice Bansal commented that the authorities had failed in their quasi-judicial duties and cautioned that precautions must be taken to avoid such incidents in the future.
In light of these developments, the high court has remanded the case to the appellate authority for further consideration.
