Operation Against Trafficking and Use of Drugs and Narcotics in Mizoram

A four-month Operation Against Trafficking and Use of Drugs and Narcotics in Mizoram, aimed at curbing drug trafficking through Myanmar and tackling the state's growing drug abuse problem, was launched by Mizoram Home Minister K Sapdanga on Monday. Last week, local communities were brought into the fight against drug trafficking through awareness campaigns conducted by police and Young Men's Association (YMA) teams in border villages. Champhai district, which borders Myanmar, has been identified as the state's main drug trafficking hub. It is believed that 70% of the state's cases are registered in the district. A dedicated police squad of over 30 personnel, formed to patrol the border, will work with local authorities and civil society organizations to block trafficking routes.

The launch of this operation highlights the growing problem of drug abuse and trafficking in the state of Mizoram and the nation as a whole. The home minister emphasized the need for stricter coordinated measures to address the rising drug inflow and abuse problem in the state despite the ongoing efforts of enforcement agencies and civil society.

It is worth noting that the drug trafficking and consumption problem is not limited to Mizoram. The meeting also highlighted the need for enhanced vigilance along the borders with Assam, Tripura, and Manipur, as drugs smuggled into other northeastern states often find their way back into the state. The fight against drug abuse and trafficking is ongoing, not only in Mizoram but across the country, and it will be interesting to see how this operation impacts the situation over the next four months.
