Several parts of Gujarat are reeling under the impact of heavy rainfall and floods with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing an orange alert for six districts.
Rainfall in Gujarat has been excessive in the last few days, especially in the Saurashtra and Kutch regions. Several areas are flooded, particularly in the Jamnagar district, and the situation is only worsening with the release of water from the Kalpsar dam. Despite officials evacuating people in vulnerable areas, the meteorological department has issued an orange alert, the second most serious in the warning scale, for six districts: Devbhoomi Dwarka, Jamnagar, Porbandar, Rajkot, Kutch, and Surendranagar. These districts are predicted to witness widespread rainfall accompanied by winds and thunderstorms.
As a result of the continuous downpour, many villages in the region have been flooded, with water entering homes and damaging properties. Roads have turned slippery, and transport has been severely affected in the region. In addition, the floodwaters have also inundated fields, causing damage to the crops. The meteorological department has advised local authorities to remain alert and take necessary precautions.
This extreme weather has wreaked havoc on local life, livestock, and agriculture. Locals share that such intense rains have never been experienced before, and they are worried about their future as extreme weather events become more frequent.
While the region tries to recover from the impact of this rainfall, authorities are also trying to assess the damage caused by floods after the release of water from the Kalpsar dam. This is the time when Gujarat needs all possible assistance and support from the center to deal with the damage caused by extreme weather events.
